Daniel R. Schumaier received his undergraduate training at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, receiving a BA in Speech Pathology in 1966.

After two years’ service in the US Army as a medic, he pursued a master’s degree in Audiology from the Central Institute for the Deaf at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He went on to earn his PhD in Audiology from Michigan State University in 1972.

Dr. Schumaier’s audiology career started in academia when he moved to Johnson City, Tennessee and started the Audiology Program at East Tennessee State University. Two years later he entered private practice, and was one of the first audiologists in the country whose practice extended beyond hearing diagnostics to the actual dispensing of hearing aids, and also to include industrial hearing conservation.

Dr. Schumaier was a founding member of the Audiological Resource Association (ARA), serving as its first president from 1975-1977. He is involved in numerous professional organizations and received AAA’s first Humanitarian Award in 1995.

Dr. Schumaier holds numerous patents, both domestic and foreign, including patents for the Dry & Store conditioning system; TransEar, the bone conduction hearing instrument for single-sided deafness; and Clik, the only premium technology digital hearing aid that is able to be programmed without computers, cables, or software.

He is the President of EarTechnology Corporation, which manufactures and distributes Dry & Store, TransEar, and Clik. He resides in Elizabethton with his wife, Donna. They enjoy traveling and golf.

Dr. Sarah A. Scharfstein

Audiologist

Dr. Sarah Scharfstein grew up in Elizabethton, TN, and graduated from Elizabethton High School in 2000. She received her Bachelor’s degree in 2003 from ETSU. As a member of the inaugural Doctorate of Audiology program at ETSU, Dr. Sarah received her Au.D. with honors in 2007.
She served as the 100th President of the Rotary Club of Johnson City from 2015 to 2016. She is also a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and has served on the Board of Directors for over 7 years. She has previously served on the Dawn of Hope Foundation Board. For more than a decade, she was the Secretary/Treasurer for the Audiological Resource Association. She was the 2015 Audiological Resource Association’s Audiologist of the Year. During her youngest son’s time in Cub Scouts, she served as Den Leader and Cub Master of Pack 25.
In 2012 she was named the Business Journal’s 40 Under Forty for the Tri-Cities, Tennessee/Virginia.
Dr. Sarah and her husband, Dr. Ben Scharfstein a general/vascular surgeon, reside in Piney Flats on the lake with their 3 sons. She enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and cooking.

Dr. Jordan Wines

Audiologist

Dr. Wines is a graduate of East Tennessee State University, where he earned his Audiology Doctorate. The majority of his graduate training was in the VA Hospital system and ENT offices performing diagnostic evaluations of hearing and balance, as well as providing quality treatment for hearing loss and Benign Paroxysmal Positioning Vertigo (BPPV).
As an audiologist and a musician, Dr. Wines has a passion for helping people who struggle with hearing, sound sensitivity, and tinnitus. He is committed to providing the best care for all his patients and excels at helping his patients fall in love with hearing. He was born and raised in Tennessee, and he and his wife love going to UT football games and attending Homecoming.
